Introduction to Computer-Aided Manufacturing

Let computers make your cuts - we'll show you how! In this class, students will gain a basic understanding of the essentials for making parts via Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) techniques. The focus of this class will be on creating cutting instructions for the 4' x 8' Blackfoot CNC (Computer Numerical Control) router in the wood shop at Artisan's Asylum. Students will use CAM software to create g-code (CNC instructions) to produce their own, unique workpiece based on CAM drawing tools or a CAD file provided by the instructor. The last hour of the class will be dedicated to cutting the students' pieces on the Blackfoot CNC. (Note: Students will NOT directly operate the CNC machine in this class, but will create the instructions to control its movement.)
Major topics will include an overview of CAM, the CAM process for Artisan's Asylum Blackfoot router, a discussion of cutters, geometry and g-code, appropriate feeds and speeds, an introduction to CAM software (CamBam), a discussion of profiling and pocketing toolpaths, and simulation and backplotting.
Students will receive essential information to begin designing parts to be cut on the Blackfoot CNC router. Additionally, students will experience the process of creating a part they designed digitally, which they can take home.
CAD experience is not required. Familiarity with working in a Windows PC environment is helpful. Some basic math and geometry will be discussed. A calculator may be useful.
Materials cost is covered by the class fee.
Jeff Jackson began his interest in mechanical systems in high school after restoring a 1979 Fiat Spider and building two all-aluminum electric guitars. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering at Purdue University. After college, he started a company in 2003 to develop MRI-safe computer research equipment. As part of this work, Jeff gained experience with a variety of electrical and mechanical technologies, such as circuit design and board layout, mixed-signal embedded microcontroller system design, thermoset plastic casting and CNC machining of various plastics, as well as business operations and project management. Jeff is currently employed as a research engineer at a small R&D company in Concord, MA, while maintaining a hobbyist interest in digital fabrication technologies and desktop manufacturing.
